A Christian Wedding

pastor involvement required

“Marriage is a gift God has given to all humankind for the well-being of the entire human family. Marriage involves a unique commitment  between two people…to love and support each other for the rest of their lives. The sacrificial love that unites the couple sustains them as faithful and responsible members of the church and the wider community.” –from the Directory of Worship of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

The wedding service is a service of worship. The service is explicitly a service of Christian Marriage and it presupposes that one or both of the parties is Christian. Its Christian intention is professed by the faith of one or both of the parties and recognized by both in consenting to the union. The union of love between two people is possible because Christ is the bond of unity.

To keep with the spirit of worship, you should plan carefully what things to include in the service. Please discuss with the pastor what personal touches you have in mind for the service. Creativity is fine within the bounds of worship. All pieces of music must be discussed and approved by the pastor.

Steps for Planning
the Wedding

You need to contact the pastor at least two months prior to your proposed wedding date. Six months is preferred. Your wedding date will be tentatively scheduled on the church’s calendar and a time set for meeting with the pastor.

This meeting will include:

  • Discussing the meaning of Christian Marriage
  • Planning the Wedding Service

The couple is responsible for obtaining a valid marriage license from the county where you are being married. Contact the local County Clerk for details. Bring the license with you to the rehearsal.

Memorial Service at Christ Presbyterian Church in Terra Linda

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection

pastor involvement required

A memorial is a service of worship. The outline for this service comes from the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship. Personal touches and creativity are fine within the bounds of worship.

“The resurrection is a central doctrine of the Christian faith and shapes Christians’ attitudes and responses to the event of death. Death brings loss, sorrow, and grief to all. In the face of death Christians affirm with tears and joy the hope of the gospel. Christians  do not bear bereavement in isolation but are sustained by the power of the Spirit and the community of faith. The church offers a ministry of love and hope to all who grieve.”

(p. 130 Presbyterian Book of Order)
