Celtic Folk Concert featuring violinist Charmian Stewart and cellist Amanda Craver

The Forget Me Knots: When Amanda Craver, cellist, moved to California she moved in across the street from violinist, Charmian Stewart. When the two met they quickly realized that they had a shared interest in obscure folk music. They soon began arranging tunes and have now been performing together as the Forget Me Knots for over 11 years.

While they play a wide range of music, everything from classical pieces to pop songs, they specialize in performing Celtic and Scandinavian music. With their classical training, progressive string techniques, and folk music experience, they perform a wide variety of tunes in an authentic and fresh way. Most of their arrangements are for violin and cello, but they have recently begun to arrange music for nyckelharpa and scordatura violin, and the combination of these instruments produces a unique sound rich in overtones and harmonies. They are available for parties, weddings, church services, concerts, fundraisers, and private events.

  • An active performer, she currently is Concertmaster of the Mill Valley Philharmonic, a member of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, a founding member of Celtic/nordic folk duo The Forget Me Knots, co-director of the Ross Valley String Ensemble, and she performs with the Marin Symphony and California Symphony. Before moving to San Anselmo, her teaching experiences included the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, the Cleveland School of the Arts, the New England Suzuki Institute, and private studios in San Francisco and Santa Cruz. She now has over 25 students in her San Anselmo Suzuki Strings studio, and until recently taught strings at the Marin Waldorf and San Domenico Schools. When not teaching or playing, she enjoys hiking, gardening, reading, and being a mom.

  • Amanda has been a member of many string quartets and chamber orchestras. She has played cello and violin with several folk groups, including Fiddle Kids, Trapezium, Almost Seamus, and the Blue Bird Trio. She can currently be seen performing cello and nyckelharpa in the Forget Me Knots, with violinist Charmian Stewart. Amanda is a graduate of the Fredonia State University of New York where she received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Music Education and studied cello under the tutelage of Nancy Anderson and Natasha Farny, violin under Cornelius Duffalo and conducting under David Rudge. She is passionate about continuing education and has attended workshops and camps with the Chieftains, John Doyle, Liz Carroll, Natalie Haas, Alasdair Fraser, Jeremy Kittle, Mike Block, and Jeremy Harman. She now runs a private string studio and is a co-director of the Ross Valley String Ensemble. When not teaching Amanda enjoys spending time with her two little boys and gardening. She will happily talk to you about plants.
